"Confucius Class" works in Sumy State University since February, 2010 and is supported by the Confucius Institute of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. The aims of the Confucius Institute are to spread the Chinese language and culture throughout the world, promote understanding of the Chinese people mentality, develop friendly relations between China and other countries. Today more than 1,000 Confucius Institutes are opened in different countries around the world. Particularly, there are 458 Institutes in the USA, 116 – in Great Britain, 6 – in Ukraine.

Chinese language teaching in the "Confucius Class" is conducted in groups of different levels of complexity. A great incentive to learn Chinese language is that the most successful course listeners can obtain Chinese government scholarships of Confucius Institute which gives opportunity to study or do internship in China.

Listeners of the Confucius Institute have possibility to pass the exam “Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi” (HSK) that tests and rates Chinese language proficiency. The exam is organized at the Confucius Institute of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University several times per year. Results of the HSK test are internationally recognized and allow to apply for the Chinese government scholarship for doing internship in China or entering the university.

For example, students of Sumy State University have already had an opportunity to study at such leading universities of China as Shandong Polytechnic University in Zibo city and Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an city.

Listeners of the “Confucius Class” can demonstrate their knowledge of Chinese at different linguistic competitions and contests, which are often held at the leading universities of Ukraine.
